Groenland, literally meaning 'Green Land', is situated in the red wine area
of Bottelary - part of the Stellenbosch Wine Route - in the Western Cape.
The
Steenkamp family are the third generation owners of Groenland and have a
long established reputation for producing outstanding red wines in the
fertile Bottelary area, near Stellenbosch.
Complex
varietal wines such as; Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and a special blend named
"Antoinette Marié" have placed the estate in the forefront of superior red
wine production. Stylishly presented, the wines' drinkability have won them
many fans - and awards. Groenland Shiraz and Antoinette Marié are regular
winners of the Veritas, Michelangelo and Gourmet Festival prizes.
Kosie &
Heléne Steenkamp and family have owned Groenland since 1973; Kosie being the
winemaker and Heléne running the catering & functions facilities. The
Steenkamp's are secure in the knowledge that their commitment to producing
premium wines will continue in the future. Their son, Piet, who studied
agriculture to broaden his knowledge of viticulture, management and wine
making, joined the farm in 2001. He is married to Louise and they also live
on Groenland.
Only red wines are produced on the farm. Groenland recently launched a Port,
as well as Sherry that was made in conjunction with the University of
Stellenbosch. Both have become extremely popular.
Functions:
Groenland wine farm boasts a strikingly beautiful garden, stunning as a
backdrop for the most exotic photographs. Groenland is especially popular as
an intimate wedding venue run by Kosie’s wife, Heléne. She is renowned for
her traditional `boerekos` (country fare) and caters for 20 – 60 people.
The farm’s red wine is available at discount prices when you attend a
function on Groenland, but you are welcome to bring your own wine.
Wine Tasting:
The
late Piet Kriel, father of Heléne and previous owner of Groenland, recreated
a primitive reservoir into a reception area. As a former captain of the
Western Province rugby team, he used this facility as a venue for post-match
functions.
In
2003, Kosie Steenkamp transformed this into a modern and stylish tasting
room, which has a panoramic view over both Table Mountain and the vineyards.
At Groenland wine tasting is free of charge.
