Pulpit Tradition
The dream had been
lingering in the minds of the Brink family for many decades and
the talent had always been obvious; in 1918 old Grandpa Brink
had even been asked by Groot Constantia to become their
winemaker, but the time was not yet right. Their strong desire
to do their own winemaking was eventually put in to action with
Ernest (Grandpa Brink's son) sending his two sons to study more
concerning this expertise. Meanwhile, in 1994, Ernest himself
was elected as Chairman of Wamakersvallei Winery in Wellington -
a position which occupied a good deal of his time.
As well as being
one of the largest pig farmers in the Western Cape, and
landowner of agricultural farms in Namibia, Ernest soon decided
that 2003 would be the year to see this great dream materialise.
His sons, Haumann, who returned with an Elsenburg College
Diploma in Cellar Technology, and Van der Byl, with a B.Comm.
degree from the University of Stellenbosch, are now an integral
part of the workings of the winery. Even the ladies actively
take part in this thriving business - Ernest's wife, Louise, is
the Chairman of the board of directors, and Carin and Hesta (Van
der Byl and Haumann's wife, respectively) being directors of
Brinkshof Wines (Pty) Ltd.
Our Wines
The brand new, state-of-the-art cellars of Pulpit Rock are
situated on the foothills of the Kasteelberg mountain - the
“pulpit” being a well known piece of the craggy background of
these lands. There are two vast barrel maturation cellars
including a 600 ton overall production capacity. Ninety percent
of the winery's grapes go to the Wamakersvallei Winery in
Wellington, whilst the other ten percent (28,800 cases) are
vinified in Pulpit Rock's own cellars.
Our wines consist of two ranges - Pulpit Rock, the flagship,
consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, Merlot and
Chardonnay. Cape Haven, a more commercial range, contains the
same as above but also includes a Chenin Blanc.
