Veranda is situated on the
first floor of the newly refurbished HIP
Metropole Hotel. It offers great views of Long Street, and urban
edginess and a big dose of romance. Head chef Roy Thomson describes the menu
as “comfort food with a twist”, adding "I love peasant food from around the
world - add a bit of glamour and you have a meal fit for a king or queen.”
The menu is well balanced, hearty and unpretentious and consists of
signature dishes such as Thai Pumpkin Soup with corn fritters and coriander
pistou, the smoked springbok carpaccio served with caramelised pear, rocket
and parmesan or the leek and gorgonzola tart, an intense flavour freshened
with a salad of mizuna, roast pepper and walnut. Other signature dishes are
duck bobotie, Moroccan chicken pie, grilled Atlantic salmon with an
indulgently rich hollandaise sauce or the beer battered hake and chips.
Whatever your taste buds crave, you are bound to find something you like,
well priced, in generous portions and a charming presentation.
