BUSHMANS KLOOF
WILDERNESS RESERVE & RETREAT AN EXCLUSIVE WILDERNESS GETAWAY
Voted the 5th
Top Hotel in the World
(USA
Travel + Leisure August 2004)
Bushmans Kloof is the ultimate
escape for guests yearning to relax and restore themselves from the
pressures of their busy lives; an ideal haven in which to explore the cradle
of mankind and discover the great wonders of nature.
Just 270km from Cape Town, this Relais & Châteaux establishment offers a
unique wilderness experience in a safe, malaria-free environment, plus a
range of exhilarating activities and soothing, specialized spa treatments.
Bushmans Kloof borders the Cederberg Wilderness Area, which has been
declared a World Heritage Site. As part of the Cape Floral Region, it is
home to a group of endangered, rare or unique trees and plants that are
endemic to the area. It also provides a sanctuary for over 35 types of
indigenous animals, including the endangered Cape mountain zebra, and more
than 144 bird species, including water birds and eagles.
As well as being dedicated to the protection of endemic fauna and flora,
Bushmans Kloof is committed to preserving the area’s cultural history.
Renowned as the world’s ‘largest open air art gallery’, the reserve has over
130 Bushman rock art sites and its new Heritage Centre displays fascinating
Bushman artefacts, forming part of the unique and highly acclaimed Rudner
Collection.
The best way for guests to learn more about the rich cultural history of
this ancient land is to join one of the daily guided rock art walks. Other
outdoor activities in the reserve include early morning or evening game
drives with delicious refreshments, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing,
archery, fishing and swimming in crystal clear rock pools. Guests can
exercise in the new Fitness Centre and then cool off in any of the four
refreshing pools on the property.
The real secret to rejuvenating mind, body and soul is the choice of
soothing spa treatments available, including the signature Hot Stone Body
Treatment. Specialised massages using a range of indigenous flora and fynbos
aromatherapy oils can be enjoyed in the newly designed Spa, in an outdoor
massage area, or in the privacy of guests’ own room or terrace – overlooking
the river and the magnificent wind-sculpted rock formations of the Cederberg.
Accommodation is luxurious and generously appointed, and comprises sixteen
beautifully styled rooms and suites. The Manor House offers complete privacy
with four suites, the Bains Bar and a tranquil veranda overlooking the
river.
Floris Smith, our renowned Chef, and his team have added a magical touch to
the cuisine, creating healthy and nutritious meals using ingredients from
Bushmans Kloof’s own organic fruit, vegetable and herb gardens. Ranging from
home-style Comfort Food to Gastronomic, meals are served in several stunning
venues, from the Homestead Dining Room to Makana (the San word for ‘to
feast’) or starlit Embers. Then end the perfect day with a soothing nightcap
under African skies at the river Boma, listening to the night sounds of the
wilderness.
For sheer relaxation, a special occasion, or a meeting of minds and spirit,
Bushmans Kloof is THE ideal luxury getaway.
