"Here man
is caged, and the monkeys roam freely"
About us
The centre's aim is to provide refuge and rehabilitation for displaced
primates in naturalistic created habitats, to increase awareness of primate
habitat destruction and to contribute to the conservation of primates of the
world.
A memorable interaction with exotic monkeys from the rain forests of Africa
and the Amazons awaits you at Monkey Town near Cape Town, South Africa. As a
primate sanctuary, tourism destination and wildlife conservation centre, it
is one family outing that you will not forget.
You will marvel at the 25 different primate species at Monkey Town - lemurs
of Madagascar, Old World monkeys from Africa and Asia New World monkeys from
South and Central America and chimpanzees.
Many of the monkeys are rare and endangered. They are intriguing to observe
- from their weird and wonderful facial expressions to their exquisite fur
coats to their agile antics.
The covered walk-ways run like tunnels through the leafy garden park and
from here visitors watch the monkeys roam freely. You may even touch and
interact with some of the tame ones. Here man is caged and the monkeys free
- the magic world of a monkey paradise you've just got to see.
Afterwards you may relax in lush, natural surroundings on the wooden deck
next to the restaurant serving light meals and refreshments - an apt ending
to an educational family or tourist outing - knowing that your visit has
contributed to the conservation of rare, exotic and endangered monkey
species. After all, humans belong to the same order of Primates!
About the monkeys
All the primates at Monkey
Town were bred in captivity. Some had been lonely pets to people who kept
them mostly in cages. At Monkey Town they are reintroduced to members of
their own species and eventually become part of family groups.
Your visit will naturally contribute to the continuation of this primate
haven. And if you would like to become involved, why not join the 'Friends
of Monkey Town' by either adopting a monkey or by taking up membership? You
will be sent a regular newsletter with the latest news of new arrivals, new
babies and happenings at the centre.
