Even the most jaded traveller cannot fail to be amazed by the experience of leaving the UK on a miserable winter evening and, the next day, sitting in an open-topped 4WD under a cloudless African sky, with a pride of lions lounging a few feet away.  While nowhere in the world offers guaranteed sightings of the "big five" - lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo - in South Africa the chances are high that you will manage it.

Of South Africa's 200 game parks, the best known is Kruger.  But it is a long way from Cape Town, it is not at its best during the South African summer, and malaria is rife.  Instead head for the game reserves, both public and private, that lie just to the east of Port Elizabeth, out of range of the killer mozzie.

For somewhere closer to Cape Town, why not visit Drakenstein Lion Park
