Kloofing,
otherwise known as Canyoning or Spelunking (German) is the descent
of steep and narrow gorges that have been carved out of the mountain
by rivers and flash floods. Giving you a whole new perspective on a
day in the mountains, the descent involves making one’s way down
active waterfalls and cascades with the assistance of abseils,
belays, traverses and the ever popular cliff jump (not always
compulsory), into crystal clear pools below.
Under
guided supervision, the necessary techniques for a safe descent are
instructed on site, with most guided trips being accessible to
everyone from novice to expert. Requiring only that you are in good
physical condition, can swim and are not afraid of water or heights,
there is little to rival a day or two spent kloofing.
This sport is a definite adrenaline based activity for the
adventurous at heart with a hefty dose of spectacular scenery thrown
in along the way.
