If you
don't fancy jumping out of an aeroplane or dangling from a piece of
elastic but still want to experience the thrill and freedom of
flying through the air, then you should definitely try paragliding.
There are many options available from beginner
through to the experienced paraglider here in Cape Town, and nearly
everyone can tandem paraglide including those with disabilities and
children aged 8 and above!
You can choose to paraglide in tandem, go on a
paragliding tour or even take the license exam which will enable you
to paraglide solo.
If it is spectacular views that you are after,
there is no better place than Cape Town and the surrounding areas to
paraglide, and is considered a 'must do' for paragliders.
Here are
just some of the places that you can paraglide from:
LION'S HEAD
This is a
beautiful site to fly from, offering a superb panorama of Clifton,
Camps Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and the Twelve Apostles. You launch
from a smooth sloping runway and land on the grass field in front of
La Med Restaurant. A 15 minute hike is required to reach the takeoff
point. It is only flyable in certain conditions.
SIGNAL HILL
A gentle slope drops away beneath your feet. Beyond the strip of
residences, all of Table Bay is laid out before you. The flying here
is usually smooth and peaceful, what pilots term 'soaring'. The
panoramic view is priceless - you can see Robben Island, the
Waterfront, Table Mountain and the city. This is one of those
special sites where you can often soar up and down the ridge and
land back where you launched from.
FRANSCHHOEK
Franschhoek is one of the premier wine-growing regions of the Cape,
and the quaint little town is filled with wine-shops and French
restaurants. A place to go for fantastically scenic flying, rounded
off with a mellow luncheon and wine. The pass is situated at the end
of a long valley, and is only flyable in light winds. Impressive
peaks surround the launch site, and you can often get high on the
thermal currents.
SIR LOWRY'S PASS
Sir Lowry's Pass offers a dramatic view across False Bay towards
Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula. The flying here is often
exciting, with thermal currents lifting us high above the Hottentots
Holland Mountains. The launch and landings are easy, and the quality
of flying here makes this a choice site.
