ILLUSTRATED TALK - CAPE OF GOOD HOPE AND CAPE OF DESPAIR
14 October 2004
Pollak's provocative talk examines how different artists and craftsmen view
society and how this is reflected in their works.
James Ford's euphoric 1899 painting "Holiday Time in Cape Town" - one of
Iziko-SA National Gallery's most popular works - evoked a response from
Deborah Poynton decades later, with her jaundiced "The White Minute",
portrait of a dystopian society. Also bringing colour to the argument are
such "grand salon show-stoppers of the past" as the romantic works by
Turner, the ideal landscapes of Poussin and 18th century Venetian and
architectural "capricci" of Canaletto and others.
Entry is R30 for Friends of SA National Gallery and R35 for guests.
